The Elections Commission (EC) has introduced a new system allowing members of political parties to leave their parties with immediate effect. The service is available through the EC’s online portal, making the process quicker and more accessible for party members.
According to the EC, requests submitted through the main portal to leave a political party’s register will take effect immediately. However, members holding senior or official positions within political parties are required to first resign from those positions if they wish to leave the party or join another political party.
The EC further explained that party members who wish to be removed from a party’s register can do so by submitting a request through the SIM portal provided to them. General members of political parties must submit their applications through the EC portal to complete the process.
The commission has stated that a formal policy governing party resignations will be published after January 1. Under the policy, general members will be allowed to leave political parties freely, while those holding senior positions such as party president, chairperson, registrar, treasurer, and similar roles will not be able to leave immediately, as they are required to complete due administrative procedures before their resignation is processed.
