Minister of Construction, Housing and Infrastructure Dr. Abdulla Muththalib has announced that applications for the government’s housing scheme will open on January 15. The scheme, published in the Government Gazette on November 17, 2025, is targeted at residents of Malé City.

Speaking at a press conference at the President’s Office, the Minister said applicants will be given a three-month period to submit applications, with the deadline set for January 15, 2026.

The scheme includes 7,600 social housing units and 15,000 housing units in Rasmale’, all to be leased as family housing. Individuals who own a house, row house, or flat anywhere in the country will not be eligible, nor can they apply for housing in the Malé area under their spouse’s name.

Eligibility criteria allow those living in a single-room unit to apply. Families with both a girl and a boy under the age of 18 who currently live in a two-room unit will also be eligible to apply for a three-room apartment.
