Minister of Construction, Housing and Infrastructure Dr. Abdulla Muththalib has announced changes to the three-room flat scheme, allowing households with two rooms to apply under certain conditions.
The Minister said the government’s housing policy aims to ensure no citizen is excluded from access to housing. Under the revised policy, families with both a girl and a boy under the age of 18 living in a two-room unit will be eligible to apply for a three-room flat.
Previously, eligibility for the scheme was limited to applicants living in one-room units. The updated policy expands access while maintaining restrictions on applicants who already own a house, row house, or flat anywhere in the country. Such individuals will also not be eligible to apply for housing in the Malé area under their spouse’s name.
The government plans to allocate 7,600 social housing units and an additional 1,500 family housing units in the Malé region. The Minister said further changes will be made to the housing policy announced on November 17.
Applications for flats and land plots are scheduled to open on the 15th of next month.
