The Human Rights Commission of Maldives (HRCM) has condemned remarks made against Supreme Court Justice Aisha Shujoon during a public meeting at Kalaafaanu School on December 7.
During the meeting, held by President to meet Malé residents, a religious scholar criticised Justice Shujoon for not wearing Hijab. HRCM stated that such remarks undermine the dignity of women and of a Supreme Court judge.
HRCM emphasized that while freedom of expression is protected under the Constitution and international treaties, it should not be used to defame others. The commission urged the public and judiciary to express opinions respectfully, avoid gender-based harassment, and uphold the dignity of all individuals.
The commission noted that such actions discourage women from serving the country and violate the Maldives’ commitments under international conventions on eliminating discrimination against women.
