The Housing Development Corporation (HDC) has commenced an investigation to determine if social housing units allocated in Hulhumalé are being rented out to foreigners.

In an announcement made by HDC today, it was stated that the practice of renting out social housing units in Hulhumalé to foreigners has been noted. The corporation has, therefore, instructed these parties to vacate the units by January 3rd of the coming year and to adhere strictly to the terms of their agreements with HDC.

HDC further warned that if, after January 3rd, any housing unit is found to be rented to foreigners, the agreement established between HDC and the unit's owner will be terminated.

There are widespread public complaints regarding social housing units, distributed under various social housing projects, being rented out at exorbitant prices. Despite these flats being designated with restrictions against subletting, the government has not, to date, taken any action against those in violation.
