Abdulla Luthufee (H. Haajaraage) has been arrested after he presented himself to the Maldivian Embassy in Sri Lanka.

In a statement issued last night, Maldives Police Service confirmed that Luthufee is currently in police custody. The statement said that Luthufee was serving a life sentence before he was allowed to go to Sri Lanka for medical treatment on 16 January 2010. However, when he did not come back to the Maldives after treatment, a case was filed to then Department of Penitentiary and Rehabilitation Service on 26 March 2012 to find him and bring him in to complete his sentence.

The police statement said that all efforts were made at the time to find him including enlisting international help through an Interpol Red Notice. And Luthufee turned himself in to the Maldivian Embassy in Sri Lanka on 1 May 2019 and the clerical work are underway to bring him to the Maldives.

Luthufee was convicted for his involvement in the invasion of the Maldives on 3 November 1988, who his in hiding in Sri Lanka. After the failed coup, he was sentenced to death for treason before then President, Maumoon Abdul Gayoom showed clemency and turned his sentence to life in prison.

He fled on the medical visit during the Presidency of Mohamed Nasheed. Many have reported that he has been living in Sri Lanka since then.

In August 2016, Criminal Court ordered the police to arrest Luthufee and bring him back to the country.
