President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced that the construction of a new fish market in Malé City will proceed with grant aid from the Japanese government.

Speaking to residents of Henveiru on Thursday night, the President said Japan has agreed to undertake the project as a grant, adding that discussions are underway to formally designate it under Japanese government assistance. He noted that a technical team from Japan will soon arrive in the Maldives to begin work.

The project was first initiated during President Dr Muizzu’s tenure as Mayor of Malé but later came to a halt for various reasons.

The government has also outlined plans to relocate the local market, traveller’s market and Valhomas market. The new Malé Fish Market is planned as a seven-storey facility.
