President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has ratified the Seventh Amendment to the Constitution of the Maldives.
The Bill was passed by the 20th People’s Majlis during its 24th sitting of the third session of 2025 on 25 November.
The amendment abolishes the establishment of atoll councils under the decentralised administrative system. The dissolution of atoll councils will take effect at the first local council elections following the ratification, with existing councils remaining in office until the new councils assume their mandates.
The amendment is now in effect following its publication in the Government Gazette.
