The Economic Ministry has urged the public to report any illegal businesses run by expatriates in the Maldives.

In a statement today, the Ministry said authorities have received complaints about expatriates operating businesses illegally. The ministry highlighted two main issues: expatriates running businesses under cover and foreign businesses operating in sectors not allowed under the Foreign Investment Act.

The government has been working to address the issue. On 8 October, the Foreign Investment Ministry released a list of 34 sectors where foreign investment is permitted.

The Economic Ministry said illegal businesses can be reported through its website, by calling 3333199, or via the Imuga portal.

A National Taskforce on Combating Illegal Expatriate Operations and Business, which includes the Ministry of Home Affairs, Maldives Police, Immigration, and other law enforcement agencies, said swift action will be taken against violations.
