Ooredoo Maldives has presented its electronic Know Your Customer (eKYC) system at the Mobile World Congress held in Doha, Qatar. The system is already in use across the company’s digital SIM activation platforms and is designed to provide faster and more secure identity verification using advanced AI technology.

The eKYC solution allows customers to submit ID information, verify their identity through facial matching, and complete SIM activation automatically. This has significantly improved the onboarding process, with activation times reduced from around one minute to just ten seconds. Most registrations are now approved automatically, and the system is able to detect fraudulent IDs and digitally altered images, adding an extra layer of security.

The technology relies on a multi-step verification process. Customers take photos of their ID and a selfie with their device’s camera. The information is then extracted and checked using AI-powered optical character recognition, followed by advanced liveness detection and anti-spoofing measures. The system then matches the face to the ID, checks the information against relevant databases, and activates the SIM once the verification threshold is met.

Ooredoo stated that the new system offers a seamless, paperless and fully digital onboarding experience. The company highlighted that delivering efficient, world-class digital services is particularly important in the Maldives, given its status as a leading global tourist destination.
