The Maldives Police Service has begun an investigation into a fire that broke out at the State Electric Company Limited (STELCO) power station in Hulhumalé, leaving one employee seriously injured.

According to STELCO, the fire occurred while the employee was attending to an issue with the switchgear system. Staff on site assisted immediately, and the injured employee was taken for treatment before being transferred to ADK Hospital for further medical care.

In a statement, STELCO said it is working to identify the cause of the fire and will take all necessary steps to prevent similar incidents in the future. The company added that it is fully cooperating with the police, who have launched an independent investigation.

STELCO also stated that it is supporting the family of the injured employee and providing all possible assistance during this difficult time. The company urged the public not to share unverified information that may cause additional distress to the employee’s family.

STELCO noted that updates on the employee’s condition will be provided by the authorities and the company as soon as they are available.
