Former Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) Chairperson Fayyaz Ismail has joined the campaign of former Central Henveiru MP Ali Azim, who is seeking the MDP ticket to run for Mayor of Malé City.
Fayyaz also took part in a gathering hosted by Azim for party members, further signalling his support. Azim officially launched his campaign on the 20th of this month at Artificial Beach. Former President Mohamed Nasheed has also publicly backed his bid.
Ali Azim has served as a parliamentarian for three consecutive terms. During the past divisions within MDP between former Presidents Mohamed Nasheed and Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, Azim aligned with Nasheed’s faction. He was later expelled from the party for violating the whip line when Nasheed moved to form The Democrats. Azim returned to MDP in January this year.
Azim is now seeking the party’s mayoral ticket, competing against Adam Azim. The MDP primary to select the candidate for Malé City Mayor is scheduled to take place at the end of March next year.
