President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced that new e-gates equipped with the latest technology will be installed at the new terminal of Velana International Airport (VIA) before 1 January 2026.
In a post shared on social media last night, the President stated that work is already underway to introduce the e-gates, which will significantly reduce waiting times for passengers by removing the need to queue at border control counters.
According to the President, travellers will be able to scan their passports at the e-gates, after which their identity will be verified through facial recognition technology as they cross the border.
He also confirmed that 10 e-gates will be installed at each terminal at VIA before the start of next year. Similar e-gates will be introduced at other international airports across the Maldives in 2026.
The initiative aims to modernise airport services, improve efficiency, and enhance the overall travel experience for passengers.
