President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has stated that the drug-related bill will be passed with provisions for the most severe punishments prescribed in Islam for drug traffickers.
Speaking at an event held by PNC at Artificial Beach tonight, the President said that resolving the major issues facing the nation was one of his important promises to the people. He identified the drug problem as one of these critical issues.
"I would like to announce that, God willing, when the amendment bill we have submitted to the Parliament regarding the Narcotics Act is finalized, it will include provisions for imposing the maximum punishment prescribed in Islam for those who import and traffic drugs," the President stated.
The President mentioned that yesterday, as part of the ongoing efforts against narcotics, police arrested more than 100 drug traffickers in an operation involving 500 police officers. He affirmed that such operations against drugs will continue without interruption.
President Muizzu emphasized that it is not the wish of the people to see drug traffickers released due to minor procedural issues. He assured that the cases against drug traffickers would be handled through fair judicial proceedings.
The President expressed confidence that if cases against drug traffickers are pursued without any undue influence, combined with the government's efforts, the drug epidemic can be eradicated from the Maldives.
