Kamrul Islam, a Bangladeshi national who was sentenced in the murder case of Munirul Islam, had allegedly escaped from Hulhumale Jail, and was recaptured on the same day.

Munirul Islam, also a Bangladeshi national, was murdered on November 26, 2012, when Kamrul Islam stabbed him in the neck while he was sleeping on the sixth floor of H. Chandhanee Magu, House 24.

Consequently, the state pressed charges of intentional murder against him. Although the Criminal Court initially ruled that the charges against Kamrul Islam were not proven, both the High Court and the Supreme Court later overturned this decision and found him guilty.

According to available information, Kamrul Islam was transferred to Hulhumale Jail under the supervision of Maldives Correctional Service as part of a community service opportunity granted to inmates serving their sentences.

He escaped from Hulhumale Jail. However, he was tracked down and apprehended on the same day.
