Auditor General Hussein Niyazy has highlighted that the amount of unpaid bills by the state as of the end of September has reached MVR 5.1 billion.
The Auditor General noted this in a paper submitted to today's meeting of the 2026 Budget Review Committee, which outlined his observations regarding the budget.
Presenting this paper at today's committee meeting, the Director General of the Auditor General's Office, Mohamed Shan, said that an additional MVR 19.5 billion is expected to be spent from the budget before the end of this year.
"We note that there are MVR 5.1 billion in unpaid state bills as of the end of September. Looking at this amount and the revised amounts proposed for 2025, the revised budget indicates that MVR 19.5 billion will be spent during the remainder of the year," he said.
Therefore, it has been recommended that the Ministry of Finance provide an estimate of the amount that will be carried over as payables from 2025 to 2026, and that a way to finance these obligations be included in the 2026 budget.
