President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has described the newly redeveloped Hanimaadhoo International Airport as a gateway to the development of the northern region of the Maldives and a golden opportunity for investors.
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony held in HDh. Hanimaadhoo on Monday night, the President said the airport will drive growth across various sectors, including tourism and trade, and open new avenues for both local and foreign investors. He also invited investors to explore opportunities to launch development projects in the northern region.
President Dr Muizzu noted that the airport is a key component of the government’s plan to develop the north as an Integrated Development Zone, aimed at promoting regional growth and connectivity.
The USD 136 million redevelopment project, funded through India’s Exim Bank under a 2019 Line of Credit agreement, began on 18 January 2023. The project includes a 2.7-kilometre runway capable of accommodating larger aircraft such as the Airbus A320 and Boeing 737, enhancing the region’s potential for expanded international flight operations.
