The Gan Air Station in Addu City has been officially inaugurated by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu during his ongoing visit to the southern region.
Construction of the air station began on 9 October 2024, and the facility is equipped with a 400-metre taxiway, a 100-metre apron and modern technical systems to support air operations.
Developed as the main base for Air Squadron 2, which operates the Airco TV2 aircraft, the Gan Air Station is the first air station established under the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) Air Corps. Operational services at the base commenced on 3 July.
According to the President’s Office, the MNDF Air Corps is responsible for safeguarding the nation’s sovereignty, maintaining Maldivian airspace and the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), and conducting aerial operations across the country. The Air Corps will ensure round-the-clock monitoring and protection of Maldivian airspace as part of its national defence duties.
