The Criminal Court has sentenced a man to one year in prison for smuggling gold into the Maldives.
The accused, Mohamed Sulaimhan, was charged by the state with smuggling goods into the country. He was stopped by customs officers while exiting the Green Channel, following suspicions that he had purchased and brought gold from Dubai.
A body scan conducted by customs officers revealed hidden objects inside his body. Upon further inspection, 2,252 grams of gold paste were discovered concealed within his body and clothing.
The Prosecutor General’s Office filed charges against Sulaimahan at the Criminal Court, which found him guilty of smuggling goods into the Maldives.
