President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced plans to upgrade the Hithadhoo Health Centre to a hospital-level facility, reaffirming the Government’s commitment to improving healthcare services across the Maldives.

The announcement was made during the President’s visit to Hithadhoo as part of his ongoing tour of the inhabited islands in Hadhdhunmathi Atoll. He highlighted the recent extension of the Hithadhoo Health Centre as an important step towards achieving hospital standards and said the Administration would focus on strengthening human resources and investing in infrastructure to enhance service delivery.

The President also addressed plans to develop a second airport in Laamu Atoll, stating that while the final location has yet to be confirmed, assessments are underway to determine the most suitable and cost-effective site. He assured that the project remains a Government priority.

Several development initiatives were launched during the visit, including the introduction of Bank of Maldives (BML) ATM services and the start of construction for a new BML branch in Laamu Hithadhoo. Other projects launched included the Hithadhoo Fitness and Recreation Centre, a new police station, and a volleyball court. Work also began on the Hithadhoo–Kunahandhoo Causeway Project.

Additionally, agreements were signed for the development of a football stadium, the upgrading of island roads, and the construction of an ice plant. The new BML branch is expected to be completed by March next year, and construction of the multipurpose hall at Hithadhoo School is scheduled to begin later this year.
