The Volleyball Association of Maldives (VAM) has dismissed former women’s national team coach Sofwan Mohamed and decided to refer allegations against him to the police for further investigation.
VAM President Mohamed Latheef confirmed that a five-member committee was formed to investigate the case involving Sofwan, who coached the women’s national team during last year’s CAVA tournament. Although VAM did not initially disclose details of the allegations, the association later announced disciplinary action based on the committee’s findings.
In a statement, VAM said Sofwan has been dismissed from his position as head coach and barred from holding similar roles or participating in any VAM-organised competitions for the next five years. He has also been removed from the association’s Executive Committee (ExCo) and prohibited from contesting for ExCo positions during the same period.
The committee has gathered evidence related to the case and decided to submit it to the police for further action.
Following the investigation, VAM has also introduced new measures to strengthen accountability and player protection. These include revising the policy for national team selection, updating the code of conduct for players and officials, and establishing a clear policy for reporting sexual harassment incidents.
VAM further stated that if Sofwan holds any position in a member club’s steering committee, he will be dismissed, and the club will be barred from participating in VAM competitions until the Commissioner of Sports confirms compliance.
The association reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining integrity and ensuring a safe environment for all athletes and officials.
One Sports has come to know that Sofwan is being accused of sexual abuse, blackmailing, and coercion. It has also come to light that the abused is not a volleyball player. While evidence against Sofwan has been presented to VAM, it has also been decided to carry forth the evidence and report the matter to the authorities.
