Attorney General (AG) Ahmed Usham has stated that the previous MDP government paid over MVR 800 million in compensations to various parties.

AG Usham made this statement while answering questions from members during today's session of the People's Majlis.

The AG said that the Settlement Committee, established by the President's Office in the previous government, had given islands and lagoons as compensation to various parties. The total amount of compensation given by this committee exceeds MVR 800 million.

Usham also mentioned that some parties received compensation outside of the Settlement Committee, and compensations were also given before the committee was formed.

The AG stated that the islands and lagoons given under these settlement agreements have now been taken back by the state.

He explained that the Settlement Committee, formed by the previous government, had been operating since November 28, 2022, without a legal framework or legal authority, following principles for resolving issues arising from agreements between the government and private parties. This committee has since been dissolved.

After the change in government and President Muizzu's assumption of office, based on the advice of the Attorney General, the President dissolved the Settlement Committee on November 21, 2023.
