The work on Sh. Bilehfahi Airport has been handed over to Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) and construction has begun today.

The handover and commencement of work took place during President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu's visit to Sh. Atoll today. The agreement was signed by State Minister Husham Ali on behalf of the Finance Ministry and MACL's Managing Director Ibrahim Shareef on behalf of the company.

The Transport Ministry first announced plans for an airport in Bilehfahi on November 12, 2020, stating that the work would be completed by the end of 2021. However, the project did not proceed at that time.

Later, in April of last year, when MTCC was contracted to build airports on five islands, Bilehfahi was included in that list.

Under this project, it has been decided to reclaim 36 hectares of land. The President stated tonight, while speaking to the island's residents, that this reclamation work will be completed within eight months.

The President said that the entire airport project will be completed within a maximum of 30 months.
