The government has confirmed that 976 couples who previously received flats under earlier housing programmes have once again been allocated flats through the Gedhoruveriya Scheme.
According to Construction, Housing and Infrastructure Minister Dr Abdulla Muththalib, there is no legal provision to remove names of those who have already benefited from previous schemes. Among the listed beneficiaries, 645 individuals scored 76 points or higher, qualifying them for allocation under the new scheme.
The Minister explained that current housing regulations do not allow exclusions based on past allocations, and no alternative legal framework exists to amend this. The issue has raised public concern, but officials note that the process was conducted in accordance with existing laws and regulations.
