The new terminal at Hanimaadhoo International Airport is scheduled to be officially opened on 9 August.
According to Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) Managing Director Ibrahim Shareef Mohamed, final preparations are underway for the terminal’s opening. He noted that the new terminal will come into operation this month, as the existing terminal must be demolished to allow full use of the new runway.
MACL recently held a stakeholder meeting to discuss preparations for the inauguration. The 2.7-kilometre runway is part of the USD 136 million Hanimaadhoo Airport development project, financed by India’s Exim Bank.
Work on the airport expansion began on 18 January 2023 under a credit line agreement signed between the Maldivian government and India’s Exim Bank in 2019. Once completed, the upgraded airport will be capable of accommodating Airbus A320 and Boeing 737 aircraft, facilitating the expansion of international flights.
