Police have confiscated the phone of MDP activist Aishath Shimon Ahmed under a court order, on suspicion of commenting on "X" (formerly Twitter) in a manner suggesting that President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu should be assassinated.
The court order to seize Shimon's phone was issued on the 6th of this month.
The court order states that the phone is being seized to gather evidence in a case where Shimon is suspected of commenting on the social media platform "X" around 2:30 PM on September 20, in a manner suggesting the President should be assassinated.
The order requires Shimon to provide the police with passwords, patterns, and any other information needed to access the phone and its applications for data analysis.
Shimon was also previously arrested during the series of protests held in Malé calling for justice for Hawwa Yumn Rasheed (21), who fell onto the roof of a warehouse adjacent to H. Mitaz from H. Fentenoey on April 18 this year.
She is being charged under Article 532 (a) of the Penal Code, which criminalizes intentionally obstructing, hindering, or preventing a law enforcement officer or a correctional officer from performing their official duties.
