Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) has been contracted to dredge and develop Maafaru Falhu as an urban centre.
The agreement was signed during President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s visit to Alif Dhaalu Mahibadhoo. Minister of Finance and Planning Moosa Zameer signed on behalf of the Government, while MACL Managing Director Ibrahim Shareef Mohamed represented the company.
Following the signing, dredging work at Maafaru Falhu has already commenced.
Maafaru Falhu was brought under Mahibadhoo’s jurisdiction in April last year. President Dr Muizzu had previously met with the Mahibadhoo Council to discuss development plans for the area and instructed that public consultations be held to guide the creation of a master plan.
The Government has identified Maafaru Falhu as one of seven locations across the country to be developed into new urban centres as part of its decentralisation and economic diversification strategy.
