Vice President Hussain Mohamed Latheef has criticized and described the unrest during the large gathering held by the MDP in Malé last night as a terrorist activity.

When the MDP's gathering, which started from Artificial Beach, was diverted to Majeedhee Magu, the police stopped the participants. As the police worked to stop the participants, major clashes occurred between the two sides. The police controlled the gathering using force.

Regarding last night's gathering, Vice President Hussain Mohamed Latheef said on X today that it was an MDP activity held under the guise of peaceful protest to disrupt the country's peace and create chaos, which he strongly condemns.

"I characterize this activity as a terrorist act planned against a lawful government, under the guise of people's power and right to express opinion, violating the principles allowed by the Constitution and law," the Vice President said.

The Vice President stated that gathering many citizens in one place, then disrupting an activity permitted to proceed with police cooperation, turning it against police orders, and putting citizens at risk is characterized as a cowardly act deliberately carried out by the MDP leadership.

"And I believe this is evidence that the MDP has failed today in upholding the principles it advocates for," the Vice President said.

The Vice President further said he thanks the police for their courage and steadfastness in dispersing the gathering, ensuring public safety, and protecting the country's interests.
