Tourism Minister Thoriq Ibrahim has stated that the goal is to bring Hankede into operation before the end of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu's term.

President Dr. Muizzu decided yesterday to initiate a new tourism project in Hankede.

With this decision, the President has revoked the decree issued on December 2, 2021, which designated Hankede as an area for the government's Tourism Real Estate Development Project and leased it to the Maldives Fund Management Corporation, in order to expedite the development of Hankede for tourism purposes.

In relation to this, Minister Thoriq said today on X that the ministry is proceeding with all necessary assessments to develop Hankede as an integrated tourism project and is working on opening it up for tourism development through a bidding process.

Thoriq said that the aim is to begin the actual development work on the island this year and bring it into operation during the President's current term. He also announced that instead of Hankede in Addu City, the ministry will open bidding today for the development of "Halal Tourism" on Donhera (along with the island in LD1453) in the same atoll.
