The Judicial Service Commission (JSC) has decided to appoint Ibrahim Mahir, the Chief Judge of the Family Court, as a judge of the High Court.
The decision to appoint Chief Judge Mahir to the High Court was passed unanimously by the members of the JSC at a meeting held today. Mahir received the highest marks among the candidates who applied for the judgeship.
The opportunity to apply for the High Court judge position was reopened after the previous two nominees, Abdullah Jameel Moosa from L. Maavah Nalamala and Mohamed Shahid from Gn. Fuvahmulah Doondigam, Goldengate, withdrew their nominations. Shahid's nomination faced criticism due to his previous involvement in political activities and his role as Deputy Minister of the Homeland Ministry.
JSC appointed Mahir as the Chief Judge of the Family Court on October 13, 2022. Prior to this, he served as a judge at the Civil Court from November 9, 2005. Mahir was appointed as a judge of the Family Court on May 23, 2010.
