Deputy Speaker of Parliament and MP for Dhiggaru constituency, Ahmed Nazim, has said that although the people of the Maldives have given the People’s National Congress (PNC) a strong majority in Parliament, the institution is not using that majority to make easy decisions.
Nazim made the remarks while speaking at a function held in Meemu Dhiggaru, as part of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s visit to the island.
He stressed that governance is not solely about infrastructure or constructing buildings, noting that the current administration is addressing long-standing issues that previous governments were unable to resolve. These include tackling problems related to expatriates, prosecuting major drug lords, and holding accountable those involved in various scams.
Nazim acknowledged that Parliament’s decisions have sometimes led to criticism and ridicule. However, he emphasised that the tough choices being made, whether related to foreign exchange, narcotics, or the media, are necessary for the country’s long-term benefit.
