An interim committee has been formed for the Media and Broadcasting Commission, which was established under the "Maldives Media and Broadcasting Commission" law passed by the People's Majlis and ratified by the President last week.
This is a five-member interim committee that will run the commission until permanent members are appointed to the Maldives Media and Broadcasting Commission.
As per the law, this committee has been formed by the Civil Service Commission (CSC).
The five members appointed to run the transitional phase under the "Maldives Media and Broadcasting Commission" law are:
- Ali Zaki, Director General / Ministry of Sports
- Ahmed Mausoom, Director General / Ministry of Cities
- Aminath Naseer, Director General / Ministry of Islamic Affairs
- Aminath Shahida, Director General / Ministry of Economic Development
- Imad Mohamed, Chief Corporate Executive (National Archives, Ministry of Youth)
According to the Media Commission law, until permanent members are appointed, the commission will be run by a five-member interim committee appointed by the CSC.
These five members must be from Director General level or above, working in offices under the CSC's purview.
According to the law, the president and vice president of the interim committee will be decided by a secret ballot among the five members.
Tasks that the interim committee can perform as specified by law:
Administrative work of the commission
Accepting cases submitted to the commission
Deciding on applications for media registration
Things the interim committee cannot do:
Investigating and deciding on cases submitted to the commission and unresolved cases from the former Broadcasting Commission and Maldives Media Council, and taking actionRevoking media registrations
According to the law, the permanent commission must be formed within 30 days of appointing the interim members.
