Minister of Economic Development and Trade Mohamed Saeed has announced that Maldivian products can now be sold internationally through Alibaba.com, the world’s largest online marketplace.

Speaking at a webinar held in partnership with Alibaba, the Minister described the initiative as a historic milestone and a “digital bridge” connecting Maldivian creators with global buyers.

He said the new platform will allow local manufacturers to reach international markets more easily. “Imagine a craftsman in Addu selling their work in Shanghai within days, or Maldivian dishes being served in restaurants in London. This is no longer just a dream—it is now a reality,” he said.

The Minister also highlighted that Maldivians will benefit from the Free Trade Agreement between China and the Maldives, which will support smoother trade processes. He assured that goods transported through this new system will move efficiently, and earnings from sales will be brought back to the Maldives without delays.

The webinar was organised to provide technical information on online business opportunities for Maldivians. It coincides with the launch of Alibaba.com services in the Maldives, enabling local businesses to open seller accounts and access global markets.
