Parliament has scheduled a special sitting tomorrow to pass the Maldives Media and Broadcasting Regulatory Bill.
According to the Parliament Secretariat, the sitting was scheduled following a request submitted under Article 45(d) of the Parliament Regulations. The article states that if one-third of the members sign and submit a motion to the Speaker with reasons for holding a sitting outside the session, the Speaker must convene the sitting within 14 days.
The agenda for tomorrow’s sitting will be announced later. However, some parliamentarians have said the sitting has been arranged specifically to pass the Media Bill.
Two sittings of Parliament were held today. During these sittings, the names of the nominees forwarded by the President for the posts of President and Vice President of the Civil Service Commission (CSC), as well as the Vice President of the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM), were referred to the relevant committees for evaluation. The Committee on Independent Institutions also evaluated the nominees for the HRCM leadership positions and voted on its report to Parliament.
