The Football Association of Maldives (FAM) has announced the FAM Awards for the upcoming Maldivian football season.
In a Facebook post today, FAM President Ahmed Thariq, MP for Mahibadhoo constituency, said that the football association has decided to give awards for the new football season to further enhance the spirit of sports, increase competitiveness in sports, and to recognize those who serve football.
Award categories:
- Best Football Player (1st, 2nd, and 3rd)
- Best Football Coach
- Best Football Club
- Best Under-21 Football Player
- Best Foreign Football Player
- Golden Boot (Highest Goal Scorer)
- Golden Glove (Best Goalkeeper)
- Best Football Referee
- Best Female Football Player
- Best Futsal Player
- Best Goal
The last time FAM gave awards specifically for football was in 2018. At that time, the awards were given in collaboration with Maldives Football.
Since then, FAM hasn't held a special awards ceremony for football, while the best football player was selected at the Maldives Sports Awards, which began in 2022. At the last ceremony held by the Sports Ministry, the best football player selected was Ahmed Rizwan (Rizey) from Club Eagles.
This year's awards will include the best futsal player category, which is the first time this will be officially done in the Maldives. Although a national futsal league hasn't been held so far, it is one of the most popular sports.
While FAM is the governing body for this sport, the Sports Ministry previously said that the best futsal player wasn't selected in the Sports Awards because FAM wasn't working on it.
With FAM's new EXCO taking office and deciding to pay more attention to futsal, it hasn't yet been revealed which tournaments will be considered in selecting the best futsal player.
