Former President Mohamed Nasheed has stated that he supports reducing the pensions given to former presidents.

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has said that he will work to reduce some of the benefits given to former presidents and parliament members by amending laws.

In response, President Nasheed posted on X saying that he also agrees with reducing the amount of pension given to former presidents.

While the President has said he will work to reduce some benefits given to former presidents and parliament members, he also said he will amend regulations so that when someone receiving retirement pension benefits from a state job takes up another state job, those benefits will be suspended for the duration of their new employment.

Among former presidents, those who completed one term receive a benefit of MVR 50,000, and those who completed two terms receive MVR 75,000. In addition, they receive MVR 50,000 for for housing rent and MVR 175,000 for office expenses. Among former presidents, former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom receives the highest amount in benefits.

Among former members of parliament, those who of parliament, those who are 55 years or older receive benefits, with those who completed one term receiving 30% of their salary and those who completed two terms receiving 45%. In addition, former members are also provided with health insurance.
