Ibrahim Falah, PNC's Parliamentary Group Leader and MP for Inguraidhoo constituency, has stated that social media accounts will not be blocked even if the "Maldives Media and Broadcasting Regulation" bill regulating media is passed by the People's Majlis.
While Falah posted this on X today, Article 60 of the bill submitted by independent member Abdul Hannan Aboobakuru Thulhaadhoo constituency, states that the principles outlined in the law regarding newspapers will also apply to electronic media to the extent relevant.
The bill also states that the principles outlined in the law regarding journalists will apply to those working in electronic media to the extent relevant to them.
As public concern grows over this, Falah said that people should use social media vigorously and that President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu is a righteous leader who will 100% certainly brighten and secure the entire future of youth and citizens in a way they have never experienced before.
"Dear youth and citizens. The Media Bill currently submitted to the People's Majlis by independent member Abdul Hannan does not include provisions to regulate social media or block Facebook, TikTok, and Twitter accounts even if, for example, the bill passes the People's Majlis," he said.
Falah said he is confident that youth will not fall for the trap of MDP activists wearing the crown of journalism.
The government has submitted 14 amendments to the "Maldives Media and Broadcasting Regulation" bill submitted to the Majlis. This includes further elaboration on the definition of electronic media.
