Ahmed Naif has been elected as the new President of the Maldives Journalists Association (MJA).

More than 40 members attended the association’s congress, held last night at Transparency Maldives, where the annual reports were also passed.

In the election, Mohamed Shahuzan was chosen as Vice President, while outgoing President Ali Rifshan was elected Secretary-General. Mohamed Usam was elected as Budget Secretary.

Naif previously served two terms as MJA’s Secretary-General, while Rifshan had completed two terms as President. All four leadership positions were uncontested and confirmed through a referendum.

For the two seats reserved for female members on the executive committee, Nashama Mohamed and Mariyam Zaha were elected, with Nahudha Faiz also contesting. Ibrahim Maahil was elected to the steering committee after competing against Ali Nishan.

The newly elected steering committee will officially assume office on 17 November.
