The Cabinet has decided to import and sell staple food items, fruits, and vegetables through the State Trading Organisation (STO) as part of efforts to strengthen food security in the Maldives.

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu announced the decision in a post on X today, noting that it aligns with his manifesto pledge to ensure affordable access to essential food products.

Following consultations with the Cabinet, STO will begin importing 10 varieties of fruits, 10 varieties of vegetables, as well as eggs and potatoes in bulk for sale in the local market.

To address rising food prices, STO has already started importing oranges, which are now being sold under the STO People’s Choice brand at MVR 35 per kilogram. Similarly, onions are being imported and sold at reduced prices after a recent surge in their market cost.

The government said the initiative is part of its ongoing policy to control food prices and provide relief to households amid fluctuations in the cost of essential goods.
