Former President Mohamed Nasheed has said that all political parties should come together to collectively discuss the media regulation bill tabled in Parliament.

The bill, proposed by Independent MP Abdul Hannan of Thulhaadhoo constituency, was accepted in an out-of-session sitting last week. Since then, the parliamentary committee has met with the Maldives Media Council (MMC) and the Maldives Broadcasting Commission (Broadcom) for consultations.

In a post on X, Nasheed emphasised that while press freedom is essential, journalists must also be held accountable in their work.

He had earlier called on President Dr Mohamed Muizzu not to ratify the bill, voicing concern that it could pose risks to media freedom in the Maldives.
