Chinese President Xi Jinping and President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu have met and discussed strengthening ties between the two countries.
President Muizzu left for China on Friday night at the invitation of President Xi Jinping. President Xi officially welcomed President Muizzu yesterday, and the President met with President Xi Jinping today.
In a post on X today, the President said he was grateful for the warm welcome extended to him in China. He mentioned that he met with President Xi Jinping in Tianjin Yingbin Hotel. today and discussed potential areas of cooperation and ways to further strengthen relations in existing collaborative fields.
"Our solid development partnership is founded on decades of close friendship and goodwill, and we renewed our commitment to carry forward our engagements in this spirit," the President said.
The President also stated that he is confident that relations will be strengthened in ways that benefit the people of both countries under the China-Maldives Comprehensive Strategic Cooperative Partnership, which China has formulated until 2028.
President Muizzu visited China at President Xi Jinping's invitation to participate in the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit. The President's Office said that the President will participate in high-level meetings of the SCO Summit. Specifically, the President will deliver a statement at the SCO Plus meeting, highlighting the importance of international cooperation in addressing issues such as climate change, strategic economic disruptions, and geopolitical instability, according to the President's Office.
The SCO is a regional organization formed by six countries in the Eurasian region, focusing on political, economic, and defense matters. It was established in 2001 by China, Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan.
The SCO, which is the world's largest regional organization in terms of geography and population, now includes 10 member states.
Additional countries participate as observers and dialogue partners. The Maldives is a dialogue partner of the SCO.
