President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced a series of development initiatives for AA. Maalhos, including the creation of separate beaches for tourists and local residents. The project, which forms part of the coastal protection programme, is scheduled to begin early next year under the upcoming state budget.
The President said that while the project could not be included in this year’s budget, plans have been finalised to ensure work commences at the start of next year.
He also highlighted that a new health centre building will be handed over this year, featuring a laboratory and improved facilities to better serve patients. The existing building, he noted, is no longer fit for use.
Further projects entrusted to the Road Development Corporation (RDC) include the construction of a multipurpose hall, a science laboratory, and four classrooms for the island school, with work set to begin this month. The government also pledged to expand classroom construction as space allows.
In addition, RDC will begin work this month on the installation of turf, fencing, and lighting at the football field, while the development of a handball court has been scheduled for next year.
Road development will proceed based on the preferences of island residents, including the integration of a water supply system.
The President also announced that Ranfaru lagoon will be declared part of Maalhos, enabling the community to derive economic benefits from the site. He affirmed government support for all projects in the area, except the establishment of a full resort in Ranfaru.
