A cargo vessel caught fire at the Maamigili boatyard in Alifu Dhaalu Atoll on Monday afternoon.

The fire broke out on Villa Buru, a cargo boat owned by Villa Shipping. According to the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF), the incident was reported to the MNDF Malé Area Command and the Maamigili Fire Station at around 3:28 p.m. Firefighters were immediately dispatched to the scene.

The flames were brought under control by 3:30 p.m. with assistance from firefighters stationed at Maamigili Airport. MNDF said the fire began while workers were cutting an antenna on top of the vessel’s wheelhouse using a gas cutter.

No injuries were reported in the incident.
