Two Bangladeshi nationals have been arrested for holding another Bangladeshi man hostage in a house in Malé and attempting to extort money from his family.
The police arrested Sadigul Mia (37) and Mohammed Azizul (37) in an operation conducted on Friday night in connection with this case.
When presented before the Criminal Court for a remand hearing, the court ordered 15 days of detention for both suspects.
According to the court order, the hostage is a Bangladeshi man named Shajahan. Police received a report on Friday night that Shajahan was being held hostage and abused in a house. Police then traced his location using his cell phone.
The location showed Shajahan was held in a house in M. Ranauraa Goalhi. While police were active in the area, they saw Shajahan coming out of SI Guesthouse in the alley.
When questioned, Shajahan told police that Azizul and others had held him hostage, threatened, and abused him.
When police entered the place where Shajahan was held, they found the two arrested suspects there. Police arrested them at the crime scene.
Sadigul, one of the arrested, is staying illegally in the Maldives and works in Thilafushi. He has denied the accusation of kidnapping.
Azizul, the other suspect, is also staying illegally in the Maldives. In court, Azizul said that Shajahan had worked for him but hadn't paid him, and after repeatedly calling to get the money, he brought Shajahan to the room and hit him.
The Criminal Court extended their detention considering public safety and the risk of them fleeing the country.
