The Civil Court has ruled that the Maldives Broadcasting Commission (Broadcom) must investigate the MVR 1 million fine imposed on X-Power Maldives Private Limited for rebroadcasting at 11 resorts five years ago.

X-Power filed the case seeking a review of Broadcom’s decision to impose the fine. Broadcom raised objections, including arguments on the timing of when the plaintiff’s right to sue arose, and also made submissions the court described as objectionable in relation to contempt of court.

After reviewing the submissions from both sides, the court concluded that the timing issue raised by Broadcom had already been determined and that there was no legal basis to halt proceedings on that ground.

The court affirmed its jurisdiction over the case and ordered Broadcom to submit, within 14 days, documentation showing that it has issued the charge sheet in accordance with the law.
