Chief Judge of the Family Court, Ibrahim Mahir, has applied for the vacant position of High Court Judge.
Although the High Court consists of 11 judges, there are currently only 10 judges serving.
The Judicial Service Commission (JSC) initially opened applications for the High Court Judge position and decided to appoint two candidates who applied. They were Abdullah Jameel Moosa from L. Maavah, Nalamala, and Mohamed Shahid from Gn. Fuvahmulah, Doondigam, Golden Gate. However, Shahid withdrew his name after facing criticism due to his previous involvement in political activities and his role as Deputy Minister of the Homeland Ministry.
Therefore, the JSC reopened applications for a High Court Judge on the 5th of this month, with the deadline set for tomorrow.
It is understood that Chief Judge Mahir is among those who applied in response to the JSC's announcement. Some candidates who applied under the previous announcement have also reapplied.
The JSC appointed Mahir as the Chief Judge of the Family Court on October 13, 2022. Prior to that, he served as a judge in the Civil Court from November 9, 2005. Mahir was appointed as a judge of the Family Court on May 23, 2010.
