Parliament’s Public Accounts Committee has removed Baarah MP Ibrahim Shujau following a police investigation into a leaked report by the Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU) of the Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA). The report alleges that companies linked to Shujau, who is also Vice President of the ruling PNC, received questionable payments over the past two years.

Speaker Abdul Raheem Abdulla announced that PNC MP Hanan Mohamed Rasheed will replace Shujau, who has been reassigned to the National Development and Heritage Committee. The move comes as MMA summoned Shujau for questioning over dollar transactions tied to official events, including President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s swearing-in ceremony.

The FIU report alleges that MVR 13 million from a MVR 23 million state disbursement was channelled to one of Shujau’s companies, with some funds reportedly used to purchase luxury apartments. Other state-owned companies, including MACL, HDC, STO, and WAMCO, were also listed as having made significant payments.

Shujau has denied wrongdoing, calling the report a smear campaign and insisting that his businesses have always operated legally. He said he remains committed to his political career.
