The State Trading Organisation (STO) has confirmed that a shipment of onions is on the way to help control rising prices, as supply shortages have pushed prices above MVR 100 per kilogram in some areas.
Due to recent heavy rains, the arrival of the consignment has been delayed. An STO official said that the shipment will reach the country soon, after which the company will begin supplying onions to the market to bring prices down. However, no details were given about the quantity being imported.
Currently, onion prices have surged in shops across Hulhumalé and Villimalé, with some stores reportedly running out of stock and uncertain about restock dates.
STO regularly imports onions, potatoes, and other essential goods, especially ahead of the fasting month. When there are shortages or price hikes in the market, the company steps in with additional imports to stabilise prices.
