Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake was formally welcomed to the Maldives on Monday, starting off his first official visit since assuming office in September last year.

President Dissanayake was received by Maldivian President Dr Mohamed Muizzu upon his arrival at the official jetty. The two leaders exchanged greetings before proceeding to the President’s Office, where President Dissanayake was welcomed by cabinet ministers.

Following a ceremonial signing of the guest book, official talks between the Maldives and Sri Lanka commenced at the President’s Office.

President Dissanayake’s visit comes at a significant moment, as the two countries celebrate 60 years of diplomatic relations. Formal ties between the Maldives and Sri Lanka were established on 26th July 1965, the day the Maldives gained independence from British rule. The anniversary underscores the longstanding friendship and cooperation between the neighbouring nations.
