Indian Prime Minister (PM), Narendra Modi, was accorded a ceremonial welcome upon his arrival in the Maldives on Friday, for a state visit at the invitation of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu.

PMModi landed at Velana International Airport (VIA) on Thursday morning, where he was received by President Dr Muizzu. The two leaders exchanged greetings and reaffirmed the longstanding ties between India and the Maldives.

Later in the afternoon, PM Modi was officially welcomed by the President at the Republic Square. The ceremony included cultural performances, the national anthems of the two nations, a 21-gun salute by MNDF. The Prime Minister also observed a Guard of Honour before being escorted to President’s Office in a cultural procession.

The two leaders are scheduled to hold talks on various issues and will deliver a joint statement as well.

The visit, which coincides with the 60th anniversary of Maldives Independence and establishment of diplomatic ties between Maldives and India.
